Starting from March this year, employees temporarily incapacitated for work due to illness will likely no longer be required to personally submit a certificate of incapacity to their employer.
Previously, employees were obligated to provide their employer with a medical certificate within three days of the onset of their temporary incapacity for work.
With the introduction of the electronic sick leave system, data about an employee’s absence will be automatically exchanged between the chosen physician, the employer, and the Republic Health Insurance Fund.
The new system enables the entire process to be conducted through a digital platform. The employee attends a medical examination, after which the physician enters the relevant data on temporary incapacity for work into the electronic system. Based on this data, an electronic certificate is generated and automatically forwarded to the employer. In cases requiring a follow-up examination or an extension of the sick leave, the relevant information is also exchanged through the system, eliminating the need for the physical submission of documentation.
It is important to emphasize that the employer will not have access to the employee’s complete medical records.
This step is part of the broader digitalization of the healthcare system, which already includes services like e-Health for appointment scheduling and e-Prescriptions, which have replaced paper prescriptions.
The digitalization of healthcare services aims to enhance efficiency and accessibility to healthcare for all citizens.
